Daniel Kasper, Managing Director

Daniel M. Kasper is a managing director in LECG's Cambridge office. He has more than 25 years of consulting experience at LECG, Coopers & Lybrand, and Harbridge House, Inc. Mr. Kasper has frequently testified as an expert on the aviation industry before state and federal courts and legislatures, executive branch agencies, and international organizations.

Mr. Kasper has also served on the faculties of the Harvard Business School and the University of Southern California, and as director of international aviation for the United States Civil Aeronautics Board where he was responsible for formulating and implementing the board's policies with respect to fares and rates, international aviation negotiations, competition, and regulatory policy. He also served as a member of the US National Airline Commission. Mr Kasper is the author of two books on aviation as well as numerous articles, case studies and research papers on various aspects of transportation and government policy. Mr Kasper earned his MBA and JD from the University of Chicago.



Dr. Darin Lee, Principal

Darin Lee is a Principal at the Cambridge, MA office of LECG, a Sloan Industry Affiliate, and specializes in the economics of the airline industry, auctions and game theory. Dr. Lee has over 10 years of consulting experience in the airline industry and has advised numerous major and regional airlines (both domestic and international) on matters such as mergers, bankruptcy reorganization, alleged anti-competitive behavior, codesharing, seniority integration, antitrust immunity, labor disputes and business interruption. Dr. Lee has testified in U.S. Federal Court and has filed expert testimony before the U.S. Department of Transportation on matters related to the airline industry.

Dr. Lee is also a recognized academic researcher and has published numerous articles on various aspects of airline economics in leading peer-reviewed journals such as The Journal of Law & Economics, the Journal of Labor Economics and the Review of Industrial Organization. Dr. Lee is also editor of the book series Advances in Airline Economics, published by Elsevier. Dr. Lee has been frequently quoted in The New York Times, and has appeared on National Public Radio.

Dr. Lee received his Ph.D in Economics from Brown University in 1998 where he specialized in Game Theory, Microeconomics and Industrial Organization. He also holds an M.A. in Economics from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario and a B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Victoria, Canada. Dr. Lee has taught Microeconomics, Game Theory, and Mathematical Economics at Brown University and the University of Colorado in Denver.



Dr. Jan Brueckner, LECG Academic Affiliate

Jan K. Brueckner is Professor of Economics at the University of California, Irvine. He received an A.B. from UC Berkeley in 1972 and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1976, and was a long-time faculty member at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before coming to UCI in 2005. He has served as visiting professor at UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego, and has been a visiting scholar at many foreign universities.

Professor Brueckner has published over 100 scholarly articles in academic journals dealing with a variety of topics in applied microeconomics. His early work on the airline industry provided some of the first economic analysis of hub-and-spoke networks, demonstrating the efficiency gains from operation of such networks. More recently, he has written on the economics of airline alliances, showing both theoretically and empirically that alliances lead to lower fares for interline passengers. Other recent work deals with the economics of airport congestion. He recently stepped down after a 16-year term as editor of the Journal of Urban Economics, the leading scholarly journal in the field, and he serves on the editorial boards of several other journals.

Brueckner has served as a consultant to American Airlines, United Airlines, Northwest Airlines, and the Star Alliance. He has also been a consultant to the World Bank, and has served as an expert witness in cases involving land-use controls and property valuation.



Dr. Daniel Kaplan, Affiliate

Dr. Daniel Kaplan, an LECG Affiliate, has been actively involved in the economic analysis of the airline industry for thirty years. He has worked on competition and regulatory issues for major domestic and international carriers as well as for the Department of Justice and the Department of Transportation. He has testified in federal courts, before federal regulatory agencies and before the European Commission as well as Congressional Committees. Dr. Kaplan held several key policy positions with the Civil Aeronautics Board and the Department of Transportation, including serving as the CAB's chief economist, where he not only provided policy advice to the Board but also oversaw the preparation of the congressionally mandated report on deregulation. He also served as a principal analyst at the Congressional Budget Office, where among other things he provided advice to Congress on aviation matters.

His consulting assignments have covered mergers and acquisitions, price-fixing, predatory pricing, airport pricing, damages, and bankruptcy. Dr. Kaplan has also written numerous articles and reports on aviation issues, as well as co-authoring a book on airline deregulation published by the MIT Press. Dr. Kaplan has taught at both American University and George Washington University and was formerly a Senior Vice President at Glassman-Oliver Economic Consultants, Inc. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and a B.S. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.



Dr. Eric Amel, Senior Managing Economist

Dr. Amel has over 15 years experience in the aviation industry working with major passenger and cargo carriers. As Senior Managing Economist at LECG, he has work on numerous passenger and cargo cases. Prior to joining LECG, Dr. Amel was the Chief Economist at Delta Air Lines where he led the development of forecast models, analysis of pricing strategies, and industry analysis. Prior to that, he was the Chief Economist at Continental Airlines and he also held a position at Federal Express. Dr. Amel has extensive experience in airline analysis, forecasting, pricing and revenue management, route planning, as well as economic, financial, and econometric modeling. Dr. Amel also taught finance at Arizona State University College of Business.

Dr. Amel received his Ph.D. in economics from Washington University in 1988 where he specialized in Finance, Industrial Organization, and Public Finance. He also holds an M.A. in Economics from Washington University and a B.A. in economics from Oberlin College.



Mr. Ethan Singer, Technical Advisor

Ethan Singer is a former LECG Senior Associate in the transportation practice at LECG and is currently pursuing his PhD in Economics at the University of Minnesota. He earned a B.A. in Economics with Distinction from Carleton College in 2007, where he received both the Winfield A. Foreman Scholarship for Academic Excellence in Economics and the A.M. Harrison Prize in Economics. Mr. Singer specializes in the analysis of airline data and has worked extensively with LECG's aviation experts on a variety of engagements including mergers, labor arbitrations, bankruptcy restructuring and financial damages.
